No stranger to all forms of the arts, Brooklyn-based singer and painter Erika Lloyd is most widely known as the lead songstress for indie rock band, Little Grey Girlfriend. This sweet soprano can also be found performing with the Renaissance quartet, The Good Pennyworths , the professional chamber choir Choral Chameleon , as a cantor and director of various church choirs, and at private events.
A classically trained artist with a Bachelors of Voice Performance, Early Music from Indiana University, Lloyd has studied with world-renowned musicians such as Paul Elliott, Nigel North, and Elisabeth Wright. She was a featured soloist in Pro Arte and developed a love for Renaissance and Baroque repertoire as a part of the Early Music Institute at Indiana. During a semester in Vienna, Austria, Erika had the opportunity to perform at The Palais Corbelli, as well as study under the Coloratura, Donna Robin, of the StadtsOper, Vienna.
As soprano with The Good Pennyworths, Erika has performed at the Boston Early Music Festival, Lute Society of America Festival, Early Music in Columbus Summer Concert Series, Washington & Lee University, East Carolina University, and more. The Lute Society Journal praised this group for their “depth in topic and vocal drama,” calling their work “engaging for eye, ear, mind and heart… A rich performance that deserves to be heard far and wide.”
With Choral Chameleon, a professional chamber choir that’s known for fusing programming from across genres and styles, Erika and members have won grants from The Sparkplug Foundation and The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and were profiled in The New York Times and The Brooklyn Eagle. The New York Concert Review praised the group for their “pleasant sound, especially beautiful in soft homophonic passages… fine intonation…forward thrust and an expressive musical profile.”
Above all Erika loves applying her classical training to her rock, folk, and pop performing, which shines brightly in her work with Little Grey Girlfriend. Writing, recording, and exploring new songs and sounds is part of her passion and commitment to the group, who have not only seen success as NYC artists but also in their working relationship with Grammy-award winning choral group Chanticleer. Her work in cross-genre performance and composition led to the world-renowned ensemble arranging and performing Erika’s song, “Cells Planets” (from Little Grey Girlfriend’s second album of the same name) on its 2010-2011 Out of This World Concert Tour. Chanticleer performed “Cells Planets” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and have released a version of her song on their latest album.
A passionate, dedicated vocalist and artist, Erika is constantly thriving on the exploration and expansion of her ever-evolving career. She loves to blend the elements of classical music with the edge of contemporary rock, finding it both challenging and fulfilling to experience a different level of connection with all types of audiences. Lloyd not only creates beautiful and haunting work with her voice, she’s also a commissioned artist, with projects ranging from family portraits to logo design. Her range in character, style and creativity ensures that Erika Lloyd will remain a staple in the music world for years to come.
